Poetry thread

Post by Alexios Komnenos on 2008-02-22, 06:21

Revival of the old poetry thread, with a revision on my old poem

Sitting in your room, loaded gun in your hand,
Think anybody cares, think they'll understand?
They can't feel your pain, they'll never know,
You can't succeed, 'cause life's a show

And nobody cares, cares that your all alone,
And all this pain you feel, will never be known,
And nobody else gives any heed,
So, it just takes a minute, carry out the deed,

Good bye I guess, see ya never,
And everythings so pointless, don't waver,
So write a note, say good bye and end the pain,
What else can you do when life's so insane?

oh my volksie,
i beseech thee,
leave me not with icy glare,
frosty touch, which once was fair,
eyes closed shut to silent pleas,
fail not in violent seas.

return our lurve to days of gold,
without you i do groweth old,
when all was innocence and bliss,
your vibrant smile i will surely miss.

time it presses ever on,
the day of parting will soon dawn,
the time to say goodbye shall come,
and ever on i'll drown in rum.

i shall miss thee, my heaven sent,
our pleasant hours have been well spent,
the memory of us shall live eternal,
a never-dying flame infernal,
for though the night may passeth over,
and all the world is cast asunder,
i shall lurve thee,
oh my volksie.

Smile there you go alexios!

Some days you wake up paralyzed,
So overwhelmed with life;
The choices you’ve avoided, all
Come streaming in your mind.

You rise from an unsettling dream
Of slow domestic rust.
It’s all so repetitious now
And nothing like you planned.

Where are your years of youthful dreams?
Your days of playful follies?
You never understood it then,
And now you wake up sorry.

Aeraaa, I just saw the last reply you made in the poetry thread in our previous forum and yes, I am quite fond of Kariotakis. Wink

I've been reading all of John Milton's English poems lately, so I thought I'd share one of his sonnets with you (line 10 also serves as a quote in M2TW).

On the Lord General Fairfax at the Siege of Colchester

(1648)

FAIRFAX, whose name in arms through Europe rings,
Filling each mouth with envy or with praise,
And all her jealous monarchs with amaze,
And rumours loud that daunt remotest kings,
Thy firm unshaken virtue ever brings
Victory home, though new rebellions raise
Their Hydra heads, and the false North displays
Her broken league to imp their serpent wings.
O yet a nobler task awaits thy hand
(For what can war but endless war still breed?)
Till truth and right from violence be freed,
And public faith cleared from the shameful brand
Of public fraud. In vain doth Valour bleed,
While Avarice and Rapine share the land.

Ah, that's from Paradise Lost (Book One or Book Two). And it's the other way round (Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven). If I were to transfer that in this thread... well I wouldn't. It would take far, far too long.

Nah, it's probably because I use it in my sig. It's easier to associate the .commie with hell than with heaven. Wink

But we are the rebellious angels who left the .commie after failing to make a difference there, to dwell in a new land where we have no rulers but ourselves. (That was the occasion in Paradise Lost, when Satan's angels had been cast to hell, when he used that phrase in his speech to them).

Except some of us still hang out at the .commie. Like me. I like it there.

Hehe. I affirm my loyalty by jumping out of the highest window in the land! Defenestration is the way to live!

I just don't find the .commie unbearable yet. But I do have a high annoyance threshold, so that may explain it.

And here's a sonnet I wrote a few days ago, in that spirit.

Of Heaven’s tears wert thou once born,
In the dawn of the Age of Gold;
When blissful men and gods of old
Enjoyed the world’s fine morn.
How soon are happy times forlorn!
The gentle fires of Earth grew cold;
With effort were crops grown and sold;
And hearts obeyed religion’s hostile horn.
Oh, much neglected Tolerance!
Astraea shunned the fall of dawn
But Love, your sister, lingered on,
To act on opportunity and chance.
Be not more far and what was once
May, by your patience, be for all re-won.

It's May-Day everyone! Here, have some Keats:

Fragment of an Ode to Maia
(Written on May-Day, 1818)

MOTHER of Hermes! and still youthful Maia!
May I sing to thee
As thou wast hymnèd on the shores of Baiæ?
Or may I woo thee
In earlier Sicilian? or thy smiles
Seek as they once were sought, in Grecian isles,
By bards who died content on pleasant sward,
Leaving great verse unto a little clan?
O give me their old vigour! and unheard
Save of the quiet primrose, and the span
Of heaven, and few ears,
Rounded by thee, my song should die away
Content as theirs,
Rich in the simple worship of a day.

Im not a great poetry lover (GCSEs killed poetry for me)

But I do quite like this one, its translated from german so it mightn'd be so effective

You love hatred and want to measure the world against it.
You throw food to the beast in man,
That it may grow, the beast deep within you!
Let the beast in man devour man.

Hitcher, by Simon Armitage

I'd been tired, under
the weather, but the anasphone kept screaming:
One more sick-note, mister, and you're finished. Fired.
I thumbed a lift to where the car was parked.
A Vauxhall Astra. It was hired.

I picked him up in Leeds.
He was following the sun to west from east
with just a toothbrush and the good earth for a bed. The truth,
he said, was blowin' in the wind,
or round the next bend.

I let him have it
on the top road out of Harrogate - once
with the head, then six times with the krooklok
in the face - and didn't even swerve.
I dropped into third

and lent across
to let him out, and saw him in the mirror
bouncing off the kerb, then dissappearing down the verge.
We were the same age, give or take a week.
He'd said he liked the breeze

to run its fingers
through his hair. It was twelve noon.
The outlook for the day was moderate to fair.
Stich that, I remember thinking,
you can walk from there.

Yeh. Tom Leonard was from Glasgow, iirc, and hated how superior people with the 'BBC accent' acted. As you can probably tell from the poem.

Hate, it's in the air tonight
We won't take no bullshit
So park your car out of sight
Cause we're gonna smash it
Break down barriers, kick in doors
Rage against the machine,
politicans, corporate whores
It's time to make the system clean
We've grown up in these times
Brainwashed by your lies
And the media hides your crimes
You don't hear our cries
So we're gonna smash shit
It's a nice change from the norm
And who's gonna stop it?
