Defiance of a Dying Dream Drama

Post by Seleukos of Olympia on 2008-06-09, 11:11

.
.

And then you smiled,
And shouted loud,
As loud as engine noise allowed,
“I am alive now!”

And as you smiled
The tarmac shook,
And light came from a straying nuke,
And noises, people giving signs,
The sky all dormant in surprise,
And then a cataract of bombs,
The sky a gleaming laser dome

“All fighters!” came the sound,
“All fighters!” bombs all around.

You smiled and gave a careless sigh,
You laughed and bid the world goodbye,
Your shiny pilot’s uniform,
Titanium casque in high tech form,
All gleaming in this midnight world,
An actor, relishing encore,
Impetuous, you jumped on board
And seated before your controls,
You jammed the engines to the full
And star wards launched, you yelled
“I am alive now!’

Waves and waves of fighters screamed
With engines blowing plasma streams,
To join the fire in the sky,
The world’s inferno starting high,
Where, as the people gape and groan,
The final act to wrath is drawn
By countless minions of war,
From Earth a host, from Heaven more,
To end the drama, once began
Of arrogance and pride of Man.

“To the stars!” the mongers called,
“To the stars!” and they meant wars.

Space fleets woke the war god Ares
And they melted in Antares.
Sirius, Vega, then Centauri
Felt the fire of human fury.
Till the fleets, in glory drunk,
In empyrean fire sank,
And primordial beings of war
Woke in starlight from their lore.
Then the mighty war machine
Of Earth, by all the stars then seen,
To stardust crumbled.

All illusions then demised.
And all hopes that did arise
Saw the stars in ancient glory,
Orbs of destiny, nor folly,
For the fate of all mankind
Once again its self did find
Dictated by the distant stars,
Or at least as far as Mars,
Where now the judges gathered.

“Plead to them!” the people thought,
“Plead to them!” it was for naught.

Lightning cracks the sky in half
With each fighter’s fiery wrath.
Steeds of metal, blue and silver,
A resplendent charge deliver,
In the final battle fought,
Above the Earth, that seamed afloat,
On the vacuum that engulfed it,
On the sentence that befell it.

And then you smiled,
And looking up,
At night’s phantasmagoric cap,
All armed and fueled, a mayhem’s spawn,
The galaxy’s defiant pawn,
The world in war, and you a knight
In this most noble final fight,
The future resting on your guns,
All beauty mirrored in your runs,
Extinction lurking when you stop,
“I am alive now!”

I've been meaning to post this after the battle poems thread and Alexius' nuclear war poem reminded me of it. I wrote it a few years ago, on a serene afternoon in the countryside.

It's very nice. I like. Although you may wish to comb it for spelling errors. I noticed a few Smile

You may be right. I hadn't bothered to check for errors when I wrote it, and I didn't check now. I'll look into it at some point.
