Re: 2080 Discussion thread

Seeing as how all the action seems to be between the EU, Russia, and the Caliphate, i made a detailed map of where their borders meet.

I have Bucharest and Kaliningrad under siege, other than that i made an educated guess of where (roughly) the front line is between Russia and the EU - taking into account the topographical features.

That's cool. It's always good to have more participation, and get it so everything isn't happening in Eastern Europe.

Re: 2080 Discussion thread

Post by Raja Sagan the Caker on 2008-02-24, 05:56

i'm sure this has been mentioned before, but where exactly is 'Saratovgrad'? is it Moskva, or St. Petersburg? or some newly constructed city??

also, i've been meaning to ask what the policy is on nuclear weapons. i think they should be disallowed on the grounds of making everything really boring - i mean someone could concievably end the story by simply launching all their warheads and initiating a nuclear winter.

it also wouldn't be all that difficult to do. all you'd need was to have an international accord signed in say 2016 that began the destruction of ICBM delivery systems, followed in 2026 with an accord on the decomission of nuclear warheads.

of course some Russian ones went missing - as you would expect - so that's where the terrorists got them, and a couple of state kept a few just in case, but in the chaos that followed the Great Crash and Orange Death they fell into disrepair and became unusable.

i just think it would be better...

(i've never liked nukes in history - they make everything so ... boring!)

Re: 2080 Discussion thread

Post by Seleukos of Olympia on 2008-02-24, 06:40

I was under the impression that Saratovgrad is St.Petersburg.
The EU's policy on nuclear weapons is to use them only as a deterrent. If a war is fought conventionally, even if the enemy reaches London, there will be no use of nukes.

It is, however, a potent deterrent. There are no ICBMs, but there are multiple-warhead missiles carried in a few strategic submarines, as well as nuclear bombs that can be dropped by Vultures. Each Vulture can carry up to four hydrogen bombs in the 10-20 megaton range.

Nice to see Australia back in the story Volks!

Saratovgrad is St. Petersburg, the name changed due to ant-western sentiment. Petersburg sounds too western.

I think I said at the start that all Nuclear weapons are either dismantled or stolen, so that we can't ruin the story with them.

Oh, I thought I remembered you or someone else mentioning in the beginning some hundreds of nukes still held by Europe, the UN and Murmansk Sunset. In this case, forget about my European nukes.

Re: 2080 Discussion thread

Found it:
"Nuclear bombs fell into the hands of terrorists, and radical extremist groups destroyed L.A., New York, Hong Kong, Baghdad and Kiev. However, most nuclear weapons were destroyed by the surviving governments, with about 100 hundred residing in the E.U., 300 residing in Murmansk Sunset, and 500 residing in the U.N."

I had the 100 EU bombs in mind when talking about the Vultures and the submarines, and also when I talked about France supplying Europe's nuclear deterrent potential in my first story post.

Ok, no active nukes then.

The latter was the case for Europe, but the former works just fine for me.

BTW, nice map Raja! But it looks like the Caliphate has taken a few cartographic liberties with some Greek islands. Surely you would not want to give the impression that there are territorial claims on lands belonging to the EU, with the current strengthening of our diplomatic relations? Smile

Not scratching its balls.

You've already established that it's run by a megalomaniac who has stayed in power much longer than would be legally acceptable, and that he has expansionistic aspirations for South America. The UN also has common borders with the Caliphate and OSPC, so some diplomacy with them or other countries may be in order (although no one is writing on behalf of the OSPC at the moment. I hope Theoden takes a liking to it if he comes here). Quebec is friendly with the EU and may eventually become a member state, which would give the EU territory in North America. And then there's the USA, standing between the UN's North American territories, as well as Mexico, and the other countries in the region. We also don't know much about the state of the UN's military and power structure, so you could write about that.
