I would imagine a sizeable amount, but fresh conscript troops could be used to fill gaps in the lines, and would be over decent quality training wise, but of poor morale.

i don't really want to post more about my military because (a) no one else has so it's not really fair if everyone knows the composition of my army and i don't know about there's, and (b) i need to keep a lot of it secret Smile - at least until other people start posting about their militaries...

Raja, you're not getting the idea. We aren't going for competition. I have said things which Saratov wouldn't want the E.U. leaders to hear, and the same with Sel. It's not a matter. I'm working on it, but it takes some time.

Ok. I'll let Aeraaa post about the composition of the 3rd Army Group first (or of the whole European army if he feels up to it), as he has already started describing it, and then fill in any gaps.

@alexios, yes but in real states you don't just give everything away...it makes everything much more exciting if some things are kept secret!! i'd prefer to reveal extremely sensitive information in the story thread, rather than in the discussion thread Smile

I think it would also be wise to keep a character list, like we do in the Greek Wars. Here are the characters I've named in my narrative so far.

Robert Eddington, former president of the EU (2072 – 2076)
Lars Dryer, former president of the EU (2076 – 2080)
Pierre Langevin, president of the EU (2080 – )
Telma Agostinho, foreign minister of the EU
Carl Hafner, defence minister of the EU

Re: 2080 Discussion thread

Post by Aeraaa on 2008-02-22, 11:45

In the Balkans sector, I've written double of our forces, that means about 800.000.

Anyway, Let's see the details for the 3rd Army Group:

European Union 3rd Army Group
Active: May 20 2057-Today
Nickname: The shield of Europe
Commanding Officer: General Dimitrios Aeropoulos
Notable former commander: Carl Hafner
Motto: Aut vincere aut mori - Either conquer or die
Total strength: 400.000 military personnel
AFVs: FV-8125 Cataphract. British made main battle tank
Schutzenpanzer Jaguar. German made infantry fighting vehicle. Amphibious
AMX-65. French made main battle tank. Lower quality than the Cataphract, it usually replaces the losses in armored divisions
Mowag Halberd. Swiss made reccon vehicle, tank destroyer, mortar carrier (different versions). Amphibious
Land Rover Rogue. A future Land Rover.
Pzh-2500. An improved version of the Pzh-2000 mobile artillery platform.
RM-130. Czech made mobile rocket launcher.
Aircraft:
Eurocopter Nemesis. Attack helicopter
UH-72 Lakota: Utility heicopter, made in USA
Eurocopter Cicada: Transport helicopter
APC's:
FV-905 Scythian: British made APC
Veles: Italian made APC

The 3rd Army Group was formed in May 20 2057, as a result of the conflicts with Russia and the increasing power of the Khaliphate. With the coming of Saratov into power and the introduction of the Murmansk sunset, this notable formation of the EU army has found itself rising in importance of the total EU defensive plan, since it hold the vital southeastern flank, which is in danger of being attacked by two powers at once. Thus, and the fact that the 3rd Army group is numerically inferior by both of their opponents, means that the training of its soldiers has to be exceptional. Even the support elements of the 3rd have to be great using their rifle, and know the basics in using most of the infantry weapons. Most of its soldiers are battle hardened and have been crucial in holding the line all these years. The 3rd Army group, following the standard EU military doctrine, is augmented by the national guards of all the Balkan nations, which although ill-equipped and trained, play a major role in filling the gaps and quelling any unrest in the region, especially in areas traditionaly hostile to central EU goverment, like European Turkey, or Kosovo...

Good stuff, everyone!

Aeraaa, Carl Hafner was a commander in the 3rd Army Group, not Langevin. Langevin comes from a business/industrial background, and hasn't even served in the army.

sel i was just wondering how the Malta Conference is going to be handled. should one of us just write it up and hope to we get the other's intentions correct, or should we decide here and have the conference as a sort of news broadcast??

Langevin is going to make a historic speech, so I was thinking of writing an account of the conference from his perspective - but a news broadcast sounds like a good idea. In any case, we should exchange some PMs to be sure none of us takes any liberties with what may be discussed in the conference. After all, the maintaining of peace is at stake.

you could always have the speech as part of a news broadcast, and if each of us feels like it we can write a segment on what our own particular character got out of the Conference. The actual agreements should certainly be decided here, i think, as it would be tedious to have all the negotiations as a proper part of the story (unless you think otherwise).

Yeah, I think the same. It would be too cumbersome and impractical to have actual negotiations taking place in the scope of this story. We'll just decide on the basics and announce them in the story. I like your idea. I've actually started writing some segments of the speech, although there will be one or more posts proceeding the conference (I should have one ready in a while).

great post sel!! i like the idea of a russian government-in-exile, that was a great touch!! i also like the tension, which i think has definitely increased w/ the introduction of a third party (the caliphate) onto the scene as an active participant... Very Happy

Oh, yes. And Boris Rodchenko serves the secondary purpose of making the Russians believe that the European offensive will be in the Baltic States (they will be spying on him and he will be genuinely careless...).

How active, or potentially active the Caliphate will be remains to be seen. The Mediterranean fleet will gather in the Aegean Sea to observe its movements, for any eventuality.

So, the battle of Kaliningrad begins... This will be interesting.

How about we make a policy out of putting dates at the beginning of every post? That will make it easier to put events in their right context and respond in other posts.
