Another Piece From Strohble's College Days

Post by Strohble on 2008-03-05, 17:39

Wrote this as a project in creative writing and think it's one of my better ones, hope you like it.

I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly; because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and associated social posturing I thus escape; because, in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I for one donít want to waste the trip; because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters; because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness, because bourbon out of an old tin cup tastes better out there; because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant-and not nearly so much fun.

Beautiful writing!
Although I will never find any joy in fishing.

Hunting is better. It requires a little less patience and more skill.

Thanks Alexios. You know that I hunted for about 18 years right? I got tired of killing things and packed up my guns and took up fly fishing full time.

No, I didn't know that.

But isn't fishing killing things too?
Or is it catch and release?

Anyways, I always donate my kills to charity. We have a nice little system which allows you to donate meat to people who might not have a meal otherwise.

@strohble: I like that. Nicely written, and with much truth.

I don't just agree with it in a trivial kind of way either. I think it is a powerful and deep kind of truth that you have described.

I catch and release 99.9% of the time. I'll still go bag a buck every couple of years to stock up the freezer and shoot the occasional duck or goose but that's about it.

So many times we forget the beauty of nature in the bustle of our lives.

@BigD-it was written in my younger days and we were supposed to project a current passion for when we were older. It's strange how it's become truth with the passage of time.

That's beautiful Strohble. And very insightful of you back then. You knew who you were and where you'd end up.

By the way, is that a photo from your work in your avatar?

Have listened to a band name Primus Strohble? They sing epic songs about fishing. Its a three piece band with a lead bass. They don't take themselves to seriously. They had a couple of hits in the '90's one was Jerry was a race car driver and the other was My name is mud.
